In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
